This exhibition aims to introduce the value, culture, and creative resources of the oceans to the outstanding high-school art students. They were brought together to experience the special marine art, culture, and sentiments and encouraged to create based on this subject. The Ministry of Education hosted a four-day/three-night Flairs of Ocean and Young Creativity summer camp for the outstanding high school art students at the coasts of Ilan, Taitung, and Chiayi. The program included dialogues with the local artists and creative workers, sketching Guishan Island, sand sculpture, traditional theater, community visit, conservation work for the ocean ecology, the culture of fishing villages, traditional tribes, and photography. The students observed and experienced the ocean up-close and create artworks out of the ocean landscape and cultural resources to learn and explore the ocean cultures in depth. This road show features the artworks created during the summer camp, aiming to facilitate exchange and learning. It is an event targeted to bring the sights and sounds of the towns and countries and art education to every corner of the nation through the creative works of the outstanding students. Longquan- Home of Sabers- Contemporary Sword and Saber Artists in Taiwan

From January to March 2008, the National Science and Technology Museum hosted a series of exhibitions themed upon contemporary sword and saber artists. For the first time, artworks of 12 sword and saber masters are gathered under one roof to give the audiences a compete view of the contemporary art. This exhibition received heated responses as it opens a space for the less focus yet significant art of metalwork. Once again, we bring you the world famous Longquan Swords and Sabers and the art of the contemporary craft masters in this exhibition of ultimate presentation of metal science and exquisite craftsmanship.LongquanCity of Zhejiang, China has over 2000 years of traditions in professional sword making. It is speculated that the two legendary swords, “Tieying” and “Jianci”, are still kept inside of the city. It is home of swords and now has nearly one hundred outlets selling artistic swords and sabers. New sword making technologies are infused into traditional craft; Longquan's swords and sabers are now presented to the world in a whole new look and take up the majority share of the world market. A wide range of blade products are manufactured in Longquan with a combination of traditional and modern technologies. Especially valuable, patterned steel technology is now revived and used to make exquisite patterns for the collectible crafts. This exhibition invited seven contemporary master artists who have experience in international exhibition to showcase approximately 70 pieces of artworks. The exhibition will be open to the public from October 18th (Sat.) 2008 to February 1st (Sun.) 2009at the second floor Art Café. Technology meets art; it is a feast of traditional crafts and an event not to be missed.

Running the Number- Photography of the Environment

The film "An Inconvenient Truth" brought the environmental issues to the world's attention. CommonWealth Magazine quoted a US NOAA report in an article published last year discussing the issues of  global warming, which indicates that the winter of 2006 was the warmest winter on Earth since 1880 (the beginning of documentation) and, in the winter months of early 2008, the world was struck by cold disasters due to the La Niña effect. The Earth has been sending out signals to mankind.  As a center for social education, the National Science and Technology Museum teams up with the National Geographic Channel to launch the educational film exhibition on the eve of the 2008 World Earth Day targeting on the environmental issues. [About the Exhibition] ★ A self-portrait of an American "Running the Numbers" is a series of photography works discussing the environmental issues and reflecting contemporary American culture through the simple and original forms of numbers. Each photo expresses an issue through presentation of a certain amount of a certain object. For examples, 410 thousand paper cups are used in every 15 minutes and 106 thousand aluminum cans are used in every 30 seconds. This series of photography works examines the bizarre phenomena behind the huge numbers. The artist uses thousands of thumbnail images to create a complex mosaic of a large image. The desires hiding inside of the images highlights the role of each individual in society and because of which, our society becomes enormous, hard to understand and unbearable. This Photography Exhibition aims to raise public interest in environmental issues to encourage people to become involved in the actions. ★Running the Number Photography Exhibition Seventeen large image works are created from millions of objects we use every day. Along with the rapid development of information communication technologies (ICT), ICT has become an inseparable part of people's lives. In view of which, the Executive Yuan proposed the issue of Intelligent Living Space Strategies in the 2005 and 2006 Industrial Technology Strategy Conference, to encourage integration of electronic, electrical, material, information science, and communication technologies into the industry of property development. These intelligent designs not only present the image and culture of Taiwan, but also convey a new trend of life. This competition is themed upon four subject areas: safety, healthcare, sustainable energy, and convenience and comfort; based on which, the designers plot out their ideas of intelligent homes through Digital Home or ICT technologies. Integrating the elements of lifestyle and user-friendly designs, this exhibition aims to stimulate and expand the scope of imagination and bring the audiences into the infinite possibilities of intelligent living and the convenience it will bring to our lives. Through this event, designers come together to present their ideas of the future intelligent homes. The 2007 (1st) Home of the Future Creative Design Exhibition presents creative technology used in the living scenarios. The designs of future homes, laid out in digital images, are targeted to create intelligent living spaces utilizing electrical, electronic, material, information science, telecommunication, automation and control technologies. Starting from the "user-centered" concept, the designers create applications for everyday-living scenarios, dining, clothing, dwelling, transportation, education, and entertainment, integrating intelligent technologies, aesthetics, and user-friendly designs to illustrate their ideas of a friendly living environment in the future.
